Dawn Meats Buys West Devon Meat
By Neil Price, Co-Editor

April 4, 2012: Meat Trade News reported that Irish processor Dawn Meats has purchased West Devon Meat, Hatherleigh’s abattoir. Hatherleigh abattoir was opened on 29 November 1967 and cost a quarter of a million pounds to build which was a fortune in those days. David Fleetwood, operations director with Dawn Meats UK, said: “We are very excited to be able to offer West Country Beef and Lamb, which has a great reputation to our new and existing customers and look forward to working with our new staff to grow the business in Devon .” Arthur Cleave the livestock buyer of West Devon Meats, added: “We’ve had a fantastic relationship with Dawn Meats in continental Europe over many years and it’s great news for our farmer suppliers of both cattle and sheep, that Dawn Meats is investing in the South West of England to enhance their UK procurement network.” Arthur and his brother are the sons of Walter Cleave who was a well known face in the cattle markets of the west of England in the fifties and sixties. This gives Dawn meats a unique opportunity to source the best of livestock in Devon , Cornwall and Somerset which are arguably the best livestock in the British Isles. The Dawn Meats Group was established in 1980, with its headquarters located in Waterford, Ireland. It is one of Europe's largest food processing companies and meat suppliers and forms part of the Queally Group, Irelands largest privately owned agri-business. It is one of the largest suppliers of Irish beef and British beef, Irish pork and British pork, Irish lamb and British lamb. The group processes in excess of 500,000 cattle & 1,000,000 lamb per year, from which it produces 200,000 tonnes of added value meat products, including 55,000 tonnes of consumer packs which are delivered daily to Europe's leading retail outlets.
