Torchlit Tar Barrel pull
By Geoff Hodgkinson, Co-Editor

July 7, 2011: The 4th Hatherleigh Tar Barrels World Tour will take place on August 27th, starting at The Crossways Inn at Folly Gate at around 3pm and finishing with a grand torchlight return to The Square in Hatherleigh after dark at 8.30pm. The Crossways is holding a Beer Festival that weekend - which ties in nicely! - and landlady Wendy has kindly agreed to have collection tins on hand all weekend to help with Tar Barrel fund raising. Half-time break will be at The Green Dragon in Northlew, where landlord John will open at 5pm and is in detailed talks with our negotiating teams about sandwiches and perhaps more. The 10-mile pull is to raise money for Tar Barrel funds - barrels are costing in the region of 40 each this year. Hatherleigh is one of a tiny handful of towns keeping this ancient tradition alive so please give generously. Members will be seeking sponsors shortly. Each year the Tar Barrel Committee also donates surplus cash to local good causes. If you're interested in joining (the Committee consists of about 50 pullers and helpers and there are only 3/4 meetings per year) then come along to the next meeting in September. New members from the area are welcome, but you must be over 16 by Carnival Day. Talk to Dawn (810265) beforehand.
