May 16, 2010: Graham Alford the proud grandfather writes On November the 9th 2009, our first grand child came into the world Ethan Ross Alford. This was a very proud and emotional moment for us all. Ethan could not wait to join the family as he was born at just 26 weekís weighing 1lb 5 oz. At the time he was given a 40% survival rate. He beat these odds and went into intensive care at the Neonatal unit at Wonford Hospital, with their specialist care he rapidly improved and was moved to high dependency. In January he had a set back by contracting the serious condition of Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). He was rushed back into intensive care for treatment, which was an emotional roller coaster for the whole family but we had the support from all our friends and the Community. Ethan recovered only to be taken ill again a few weeks later, this time he had to go to the Bristol Royal Hospital childrenís unit for tests which resulted in him having an operation for narrowing of his intestine, again Ethan fought this and recovered well. After several weeks of recuperation he came home to Family and friends. It was then discovered that he had developed a hernia which again needed surgery at Bristol and the following day he returned home. He is now 10lbs in weight and in very good health. This has only been possible by the excellent care he received at Exeter and Bristol Hospitals and the support of friends and colleagues which gave us all strength and courage we needed. We would like to thank every one for their help, prayers, and best wishes. To say thank you for the marvellous work done by the Neonatal units at Exeter and Bristol Jade and Simon held a Quiz at the Tally Ho on the 9th of May which raised a fantastic £405.00 for this good cause. Thank you all for your incredible generosity. On July 4th Simon along with a few other daredevilís are going to be sky diving to raise more money for the unit. If you would like to sponsor Simon please feel free to contact him. Simon and Jade are now moving to Tavistock, as Simon has taken a new job as Head Chef at the Royal Oak Inn at Meavy. They will keep in contact with all their friends and update them on Ethanís progress. By the way Ethan means Strong, Willed he has definitely living up to his name. If you wish to sponsor Simon Please contact him: email Simon Alford< the_offspring_r@hotmail.com or on his facebook site.
