A Bridge TOO Far
By Neil Price, Co-Editor

March 13, 2010: Quite a few of you in Hatherleigh will be familiar with the sight of me puffing up the hills with a double buggy and dogs. Over the coming months you'll also see me puffing up the hills here and further afield on my bike with one rather chunky (and very smiley) young boy on the back shouting, 'GO GO MAMA!'. The reason for my pain is that I'm a glutton for punishment and that I have signed up for the Help for Heroes 'A Bridge Too Far' Bike Ride in September. This will involve a large group cycling 350 miles in 5 days through Belgium and Holland fit/unfit/able-bodied/amputees/military/civilian all cycling together and paying tribute to all those who gave, and continue to risk, their lives for our freedom - and hopefully raising millions by doing so. While a family member was in Afghanistan last year I decided that I needed some sort of personal challenge to focus on (aside from 2 energetic toddlers and 2 dogs!) and also wanted to do my bit to support our wounded soldiers. Fortunately, he returned safe and sound just before Christmas but things could have been so different for us and are so for many soldiers and their families. The work that Help for Heroes has done, and continues to do in raising money to support the returning wounded, is truly inspiring. I really do need your help to raise as much sponsorship as I possibly can for this amazing charity. I am no expert cyclist, only just beginning my training and haven't yet found one ounce of enjoyment in it. I'm hoping the answer lies in my new saddle!! You can donate by visiting my just giving page online www.justgiving.com/Kate-Burgess or by contacting me directly on 811133 or at 15 High Street to complete a sponsorship form. I have a supply of Help for Heroes wristbands if you would like to buy one (2 each plus postage donation appreciated).
