Green Cycling from Hatherleigh
By Neil Price, Co-Editor

January 22, 2010: Graeme Willgress, a Hatherleigh resident is in the process of organising a 4000 mile cycle ride around the Uk mainland next year to support the charity Sustrans. There are two reasons for doing this. Firstly, Sustrans are Britains leading charity regarding Sustainable Transport issues and give us choices about how we travel. With 12,000 miles of National Cycle Network inplace so far (one third traffic free) we can all enjoy the countrside whether walking or cycling, regardless of age. The Tarka Trail, Granite Way and National cycle Network route 27 (which passes through Hatherleigh) are good examples. The second reason is personal. Five years ago, he suffered a major breakdown and since then my mental health has been poor, preventing me from working. I want to put something back and raise awarenes of the role exercise can play in managing conditions like mine. I have lots of equipement sponsors already from local shops to International concerns as far away as hte USA. I think my journey could be used positively to promote Hatherleigh and it's wonderful community. I have also set up a donation page at www.justgiving.com/Graeme-Willgress and are moving towards actively promoting the fundraising. A page in the Parish Pump would go a long way to helping this get started. I also hope to run a market stall on behalf of Sustrans at the Hatherleigh Market in the spring/summer.  Two preparatory rides this year will see me travel around the South West Penninsular in April and from North Wales to my home in August. These will also be used to begin the promotional work. Any help you can give me would be gratefully received. I look forward to your reply. Graeme Willgress Round Britain-Cycle for Health.
