Après snow, le déluge
By Geoff Hodgkinson, Co-Editor

February 10, 2009: Snow disappeared rapidly Sunday and Monday as higher temperatures and rain came in from the south and this time pushed away the cold air from the east. Motorists cheered for a few minutes then realised that all that melted snow would have to go somewhere - like into the rivers for example. The River Lew rose mightily during yesterday and by 5pm was approaching the tops of its banks. By 11pm the 3m depth gauge in the river was immersed and the water level was barely 12" or so below the patio of the Bridge Inn. Landlord Steve crossed his fingers and was prepared for the worst but the new flood relief defences seem to control things nicely and the danger receded. Here's Steve and his wife Pauline watching as the water approached the top of the arch under the road bridge (see background, right)
