Whist at the Centre
By Geoff Hodgkinson, Co-Editor

August 11, 2008: Never played Whist before? Well, now is your chance. Rosie writes that the Centre has three afternoon whist drives coming up, and would welcome beginners as well as experienced players. The hope is to have a whist drive each month, in the afternoon or evening for those who might be interested. She told us: "Our first whist drive is this Friday 15th August at 1.30 pm. Come and join us, meet new people, bring a friend and have an enjoyable afternoon in Hatherleigh." Entrance is £1.50 and tea and coffee are included.

What is Whist? It's really Bridge without the aggression! It's a social event at which progressive games of the trick-taking card game are played for fun. A hand is played at each table. After each round, winning couples from each table move to the next table. Trumps for each game are fixed, usually by the rotation, and may include 'no trumps' as well. A couple’s score for the round is the number of tricks they have won and prizes are awarded for the highest scoring couple.

Queries? Call and speak to Rosie – centre manager - on 01837 810239. The dates for the next three drives are: 15th, 22nd and 29th August. All start at 1.30 pm.
