U13 Cricket Stars
By Geoff Hodgkinson, Co-Editor

July 29, 2008: Paul Cooper writes, with some pride: "It may be the start of the football season for some, but to the boys and girls of Hatherleigh Cricket Club Under 13's it's also the start of something bigger.

The MCC 'Spirit of Cricket' tournament is contested by 1800 Under 13 teams from all over the country, from Penzance to Scotland, and by winning the south west heat at Bournemouth last Tuesday Hatherleigh progesses to the national finals along with seven teams from other regions.

Hatherleigh won the Devon final by beating Thorverton, and the South West title by beating Penzance in the semi-final and then Broadstone (Dorset) in the final of this 20-over competition. They now visit Oakham School, Rutland on the 4th - 8th August where they will play against the seven other finalists.

Hatherleigh Under 13's are managed by Charles Inniss and have played together since 9 under the captancy of Luke Reynolds. Hatherleigh President Brian Jones said: "It's great to see the team spirit of these children. Would anyone believe that little Hatherleigh would get to such a prestigious final. Can you imagine playing the likes of some of those bigger cities?" Hatherleigh has a population of 1400!
