Woodfair comes home.
By Geoff Hodgkinson, Co-Editor

June 4, 2008: The biggest woodfair in the south west returns to Roadford Lake this summer. The popular Woodfair South West event takes place on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July. The woodfair, which has been held at the site for the last eight years, took a break last year to go to the races at Taunton but it was sorely missed by many of its regulars, both visitors and exhibitors. Now it’s coming home and there is much to celebrate! A variety of exhibitors and demonstrators from the wonderful world of wood will be showing off their products and skills. Children will be able to get down and dirty in the lakeside woods; make their own nest-boxes and take part in wood and willow workshops. Tom, the beautiful shire horse will be showing why, in these days of super technology, horse power is still regarded as one of the most effective means of logging and visitors will be able to learn why woodfuel is fast re-establishing itself as one of the most important fuels of the future. “We’ve got everything from big forestry machines to medieval farriers; falconry to furniture makers, timber frames to turning. Whether it’s the old world of wood you hanker after or the potential of biofuels as a means of tackling climate change, Woodfair South West can show you why wood is as relevant today as it’s always been,” says organiser, Caroline Blackler. There’s so much taking place at the woodfair that visitors will welcome the great range of food and drink on sale. The Ruby Country Initiative will be flying the flag for local produce from its own marquee which will be packed full with the best the region has to offer. South West Lake’s Trust is providing the beautiful venue of Roadford Lake and the event is supported by a range of partners including the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Park Authorities, both Devon and Cornwall County Councils and the Forestry Commission, all of which share Woodfair South West’s commitment to supporting the rural economy.
