Band Update
By Geoff Hodgkinson, Co-Editor

May 19, 2008: Here’s a story - long overdue because of our techie problems – from Silver Band Press Secretary Jim Reynolds, who wrote: “Now that Spring has arrived, the Band has awoken from its post Christmas break and is busy practising a new summer programme. Last month we competed at the West of England National Brass Band Contest in Torquay, and also gave a Concert which was held at Black Torrington Parish Church. With regard to the Contest, although we played really well, unfortunately we did not make the top three places to qualify for the finals later in the year. The concert at Black Torrington however was very well received by a good audience. During the interval we were served with a selection of fantastic refreshments.

On Sunday 27th April we welcomed to the Community Centre one of the country’s top conductors, Mr Philip Harper, who gave us a master class. This was wonderful experience and proved to be extremely beneficial to the band and rewarding for everyone.

At our recent A.G.M. the Band were delighted to announce that Mr Steve Collier will be our President for the forthcoming year. Steve is a Customer Service Manager at our local Nat West Bank, and is well known and respected throughout our community. Our outgoing President Mrs Mary Sanders was thanked for all her hard work and continued support during her year in office. The Officers appointed for the year are as follows: Robert Barkwell, Chairman; Robin Wonnacott - Musical Director; Greg Morgan - Assistant Musical Director & Treasurer; Cary Brock – Bandmaster; Karen Squire – Secretary; Mark Quick - Contest Secretary; Karen Squire & Jade Morris - Joint Librarians. Jane Fawcett, Jade Morris & Claire Pratt were welcomed onto the Committee.

Thursday May 1st was our first march of the year - leading the Parade around the town for the Church Anniversary. Then on Bank Holiday Monday May 5th we made our annual pilgrimage to Iddesleigh for their Club Day. Later in the month on Saturday the 24th we are holding a Cider and Pasty evening in the town square at 7.30 pm. This is a very popular event in the Band’s calendar. Who knows, if we get good weather later in the year, we may hold another such event. We look forward to seeing you during any or all of these events.

Lots more information and pictures of the band can be found at www.hatherleighsilverband.co.uk.
