Dan, the fish man, returns to the sea.
By Neil Price, Co-Editor

April 3, 2008: Dan a favourite character of Hatherleigh Market is heading back to the sea on the on the Ocean Challenge.
RNLI volunteer and local fish merchant, Dan Garnett from Clovelly is planning an extraordinary sailing adventure that he hopes will benefit both him and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). He's taking part in the final leg of a round-the-world yacht race! In 2008 he will be joining the Clipper fleet in the Caribbean and racing first to New York and then across the notorious North Atlantic to Liverpool. Dan will be at sea for 50 days and will sail more than 5,000 miles.
Dan is hoping to prove that despite turning 50 this year, he's got plenty of fight left in him. He also hopes that the intensive training he will have to put in for the Clipper 07-08 race will inspire others to give to the RNLI's Train one, save many crew training campaign:
‘The campaign aims to raise money to train the RNLI's volunteer crews in all the areas they need so they can successfully help to save lives at sea. As a former RNLI crew volunteer at Clovelly, I feel very strongly about this. So what better way to raise funds for the RNLI than by training myself for a water based adventure?'
‘There's a huge amount to do. I've already signed up with a personal trainer and my first big hurdle is to loose weight and get fit! At this rate I will gain a good deal personally, but its also satisfying to think that the RNLI will gain too.'
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston who heads the Clipper event, is currently racing single-handed in his Open 60 Saga Insurance in the Velux 5 Oceans round-the-world race:
‘Dan will be joining more than 1,400 people who have made the Clipper experience a turning point in their lives. We want people to finish the race thinking that it is the best thing that they have ever done. It is wonderful to have an RNLI crew member onboard and I am sure the excellent training he has received from the RNLI, along with his comprehensive Clipper training, will prepare him well to race safe and fast in Clipper 07-08.'
Dan is no stranger to the RNLI as he was a volunteer crewmember at Clovelly for 12 years, and is now the station's Lifeboat Press Officer and a shore helper. He runs a mobile fish business in North Devon and has a busy family life to fit in too.
