Ruth and Brendon DONE IT!
By Neil Price, Co-Editor

September 12, 2016: Thank you to everyone who sponsored our bike ride in aid of Devon Historic Churches Trust Rev. Ruth Hansford (Team Vicar of Hatherleigh, Meeth, Exbourne, Jacobstowe and Northlew in the Northmoor Team Ministry) and her son Brendan (8 years old) would like to announce that we completed our bike ride for Devon Historic Churches Trust from Hatherleigh via the back road to Jacobstowe and back. The pull up Park Road and then to the top of Hatherleigh Moor required several pauses and much puffing (particularly by Ruth). As we coasted our way down past the Upcotts to Cadham, we realised that going back would involve a good deal of going uphill. We reached Jacobstowe Church in just over 45 minutes and enjoyed having a break at the Cream Teas there (with Ruth looking rather flushed!!). Refreshed and replenished, we set out on our return and, after 55 minutes, whizzed down the hill to finish at Hatherleigh Church. As we wheeled our bikes up the church path towards home, Brendan said, ‘That was great fun!’ After riding 9 miles in less than 2 hours, Brendan immediately got off his bike after cycling up the drive to charge off and join his sister Krysty playing with friends at our neighbour’s house! Rev. Ruth went inside for an Almond Magnum and a sit down with a very welcome cup of tea. If we manage to collect all the money pledged so far, we will have raised £828.50 across the five churches (not counting any Gift Aid). Of that, 50% will go to Devon Historic Churches Trust for their grant fund to help churches in Devon repairing and restoring their buildings, and 50% will be returned to the relevant church. If you have sponsored us and already given us the money, thank you for having more faith in us than we did! If you have sponsored us and have not given us the money, it would be helpful to have your sponsorship money asap (contact us and we can tell you how much if you have forgotten!). If you would like to sponsor us in retrospect, it’s still not too late!! Brendan and Rev. Ruth have enjoyed getting on their bikes over the summer (Rev. Ruth previously hadn’t ridden since going up and down the school drive!) and the family now possess a bike rack for the car. Rev. Ruth is very proud of Brendan for getting his Mum to practice, being sensible and safe out on our rides, and for persevering even when it was hard work.
