A Big Man Moves On
By Geoff Hodgkinson, Co-Editor

September 22, 2015: Yesterday brought the sad news that Brian Doidge, a Tar Barrel stalwart, has passed on to that great Tar Barrel Committee in the sky after a long illness. I first met Brian in 2001 when I finally plucked up the courage to contact the Tar Barrel team, having photographed them from a distance for several years previously. It was a nervous moment for me but Brian did not hesitate. "Sure," he said , "meet us at the top of Church Lane at 10 and we'll show you what we do!" I'd expected a bunch of tough-talking Devon hard nuts who'd scoff at this townie. Instead, they turned out to be a really friendly bunch, keener to yap than work. Most seemed to have Scottish or Welsh names and no one wanted to try the hip flask of rum I'd brought along specially! Brian was a natural in front of the camera and in tribute to the big man who claimed to have once carried a cow carcass solo (I believed him), who never failed to give me support and who helped me into the Hatherleigh Tar Barrel community, here's the picture I took of him that day. RIP Brian. Hatherleigh.net extends its sympathies to Beryl, Michael and Stephen and all others affected by the news. The funeral is at 2pm on Wednesday 30th, at the Methodist Church.
