Frederick Albert Hockin 1896-1915

September 19, 2015: Frederick Albert Hockin was born in Hatherleigh in 1896 and signed up in the very early days of WW1 with the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, his service number was 11517. His record showed that he was accidently killed on the 18.10.1915 at Maricourt, but does not say how the accident happened. He was buried in the Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery. Frederick was the fourth child of five of James George Hockin a mason and house builder and his wife Pricilla Ann (Smale). James was also born in Hatherleigh and Pricilla was born in Black Torrington and the family lived in High Street, Hatherleigh. In the 1911 census, at the age of 14, Frederick was listed as being a tailors apprentice.
