December 17, 2013: Clare Tyson Writes “I have created a group on facebook called Friends of Island Park to help establish a network of willing volunteers/guardians to (hopefully!) help with the upkeep of what is almost the town's multi functional recreation area.
You are no doubt aware that many of the towns groups/events/promotions/maintenance jobs are often done by the same people, well this is an attempt to try and bring some fresh blood to help out and share the workloads.
I know there have been work party's in the past to help tidy the area by the river but they seem to be one-offs and fizzle out, possibly because people get despondent.
Island Park is an ongoing maintenance area and the play park is due some tlc in the near future. The council pay for the gardener and Norman who litter picks but many little jobs are often done by one or 2 people which then become big jobs, refilling bark under the climbing frame is one.
I also thought it might be an avenue for other groups to help recruit when the need arises, perfect example being to help Brandis Corner Wildlife Group clear out Hatherleigh Moor pond, a task that needed outside volunteers as it had got so bad, and there's more to be done.
Work parties are always good fun as they are a chance to socialise and get to know your townsfolk, and I think with a public space like this a social media group will help people dip in and out as their own time allows.
If you agree could you tell your friends to help share the group. I know facebook isn't ideal for everyone but its a start.
