Carnival News
By Neil Price, Co-Editor

June 27, 2013: Louise Bater writes "July already?! Preparations for Carnival and Island Park Party are already well in hand, not forgetting the coffee morning in the old schools on Tuesday August 6th, but as this is 110 years since the first Carnival in 1903 we felt we wanted to do something more to mark this. As we are all getting ”eco friendly” and trying not to use plastic bags we thought we would get with the times and have some canvas bags printed with some sort of carnival logo, and with a primary school full of budding artists who better to ask? So we are running a competition for all the primary school children to design a bag to commemorate 110years of Hatherleigh Carnival. This will be launched at the school fair on Friday 5th of July, but children can collect and return entry forms from the school office until the final entry date of Friday 19th July, these will then be judged and the winning key stage 1 and key stage 2 entries will be printed onto bags ready to purchase after the results are announced at the Island Park Party on September 14th. We look forward to seeing the finished bags! We have now fixed a date for a film show of last years carnival photos plus we really would like you to bring along your carnival photos and memorabilia from the last 110 years. This will be on Saturday October 12th, we will let you know more details next month, but for now please start turning out your pictures etc we would love to see them. We have more exciting news and would like to congratulate Linda King, Leanne Anstey and from the tar barrel committee Laura Reddaway who are all expecting babies this year (not on Carnival day though please Laura!), this is wonderful news and we wish them all well and it will hopefully secure the next generation of the carnival committees but it does mean we are VERY short of help now. We have to make a little plea to all the businesses who kindly support the carnival by advertising in the programme, Linda (who worked very hard last summer holidays and put together the 2012 programme) will be sending out a copy of last years advert to you in the next couple of weeks together with a stamped addressed envelope for you to return your money and advert, please highlight any changes by August 23rd,we’re sorry that we’re unable to collect them all and we hope you’ll understand and continue supporting Hatherleigh Carnival. Finally I expect some of you have already met our Queen Jazzmine who, with her Mum is very busy trying to sell Queen tickets, which raises much needed funds for carnival plus Jazzmine will receive 10% of sales to help towards the cost of the Queens tableaux. Knocking on peoples doors and selling tickets is not the nicest job so please show your support for her and the carnival and buy a couple, thank you."
