Firefighters Climb for 24 Hours
By Geoff Hodgkinson, Co-Editor

June 22, 2013: Hatherleigh's Firefighting Team took on a 24-hour climbathon this weekend starting at 8pm last night (Friday) at the Fire Station. The idea was to climb their big ladder as many times as possible over the 24 hour period to raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance and the Firefighters Charity. Here's Andrew Tucker at the top of the fully extended ladder during one of his shifts at the Station. When we visited they had moved temporarily to the Coop in Bridge Street hoping to catch donations from the Saturday shoppers and because the ladder could not be fully extended they were climbing a mere 13 steps each time. However, by 2pm they were back at headquarters where each ascent involved 30 steps. They passed 1400 ascents while we were taking these shots and hoped to reach 2000 by tonight although the 30-step sessions might make that difficult. There's currently 12 in the Hatherleigh firefighting squad but we're told there's always room for new faces so if you fancy giving it a try just pop down and meet the lads and lasses sometime.
