June 9, 2013:
The outside sport for the mentally active. The seventh Hatherleigh Outdoor International Chess Challenge, incorporating the William Best’s Hat competition, took place in the sun in Hatherleigh square on Saturday 8th at 3pm.
Hatherleigh welcomed the hardy players who were braved the sun in the square. Theo Slade, 12, of Shebear College, from Bude won the tournament much to his father’s delight as he grasped the bottle of wine. Theo is off to China soon, to play chess. He is on his way to being a grandmaster and represents Devon and is 9th best junior in the country. We wish him all the best in China and with his chess career.
Local man John Morris from Okehampton came second.
The trophies will be on display in The Cabinet at the Tally Ho!
The William Best’s Hat competition was won by Neil Price. The cup is in memory of William Best a player from Torrington who sadly passed away last year.
The first Saturday in the month sees a chess gathering in the Tally Ho!, chess for fun for free at three. There is also a pub chess league which runs through the winter months. If your pub can muster 4 players on a regular basis. Please contact Neil 07890 615454 or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you wish to join the league.
