Hatherleigh come Second in Torridge Cup
By Geoff Hodgkinson, Co-Editor

May 3, 2013: Hatherleigh FC visited Vicarage Field in Torrington yesterday (Thursday) for the final of the Torridge Cup. Reckoned to be the Premier independent cup contest in the West, the Cup is a major part of the Torrington May Fair celebrations and the final is always held on the evening of May Fair Day. Hatherleigh has had a great season, reaching this prestigious final as well as nearly winning their league, but with disappointments towards the end mainly due to injuries as we understand it. This contest saw the lads getting a great early goal to take the lead. This team is the best we've seen. Admittedly its a few years since we followed them but the standard is now very high, with everyone playing for each other and big set-tos in the goal mouth a thing of the past. Gone too are the long boots upfield to anywhere, followed by big mid-air contests. Sad that - for us - because with lots of mid-field action and great defending and attacking strategies, plus the excellent team discipline, good camera shots are few and far between. These guys are playing beyond their league now (well done Danny) but Torridgeside proved a real handful and would not be beaten. At this level, and with two sides playing like this, it's mistakes that make the difference. The ultra-low sun made photography horrendous and once the sun went down and the lights came on, things went from bad to worse, for us and the boys. Nevertheless we got some reasonable shots and here's just two to give you a flavour of the night's entertainment. Well done Hatherleigh! Keep it up! The result was 5-1 to Torridgeside BTW (well done to them!) And thanks in advance to Trish for the promise of chocolate cake.
