Hatherleigh Area Business Forum AGM - May 8 , 2008
After a few months of quiet on the Hatherleigh Area Business Forum it is time for the AGM which will be held at the Community Centre On Thursday 8th May at 7pm. There will be an update from Sally Vick on the sign posts in and around Hatherleigh. We will also discuss the best way we can help to implement the 'Hatherleigh Plastic Bag Free Zone'; and I would personally encourage all residents to start thinking in a more sustainable way with regards to carrying shopping home. I am the worst for forgetting to take a bag with me to the shops and would quite happily pay for bags on those occasions as I believe it would motivate me to remember. Have you a view on this? It has to be said there is a general feeling amongst local businesses, that I have spoken to, that maybe there is not the need for the Hatherleigh Area Business Forum and from the lack of support that the meetings receive I have to agree. If you are a local business person or representative and would like to share your views on this and any of the other topics then please come along to the meeting on Thursday 8 May 7pm. Chairman Business Forum, Steve Carter

HATHERLEIGH GARDENING CLUB Sorry about missing last month's Pump - hope most of you were aware of the talk on Composting, either through contact, word of mouth or the posters around the town. Let's hope I'm more on time for this edition! There is no meeting in the Old Schools this month - April- but on the 19th of the month we shall be making a visit to Lukesland, a lovely garden near Ivybridge; at its best at this time of year. This is a Saturday outing and we shall in all probability take a small coach; this means there may well be a few spare seats if anyone else would fancy an afternoon out. We shall leave Hatherleigh at 12.30 from the Co-op, returning by 6.00pm - the total cost will be £12. Please contact me on the number below if you are interested. Advance notice too of the SPRING SHOW and PLANT SALE - now a regular annual event. Weather permitting, the plants will be for sale in the Square, while the Show itself will be in the Old Schools. The date for this popular event is Saturday May 3rd and schedules with classes and entry form will be out soon. We hope that you will continue to support this Show which, despite the vagaries of the weather and earlier Springs, always manages to produce an excellent display. As always, contributions for the plant stall are much appreciated. Susan Gill 01837 810893

CAROLLING AROUND TOWN - December 19 - December 21 , 2007
Dec. 19th to 21st It is a Hatherleigh tradition for members of the three churches – and anyone else who likes to come – to go carolling together around Town (and sometimes out of Town) on the days leading up to Christmas. In this way, we have raised hundreds of pounds for good causes. Have you sung with us before? Or helped us with the Collecting Boxes? Would you like to join us this year? We have great fun, though the weather is sometimes a bit of a challenge. Last year things went well with just enough singers for each of three evenings. We usually meet at 7pm in the Square, and sing for approx. 2 to 21/4 hours. If you are able to come on any or all of the evenings, please ring me at Salar Gallery on 01837-810940 as soon as possible or collect a Form from the Gallery, fill it in and return it and I will put you on the list. (We only cancel it if weather is atrocious or there are not enough singers). Also, please let us know in good time if you would like us to come and sing to you – either in your street or in your house. This year we propose that any donations raised should be divided between SHELTERBOX and HOSPISCARE. NB. Those of you who can come, please dress up warmly, wear some light coloured clothing and bring a well-charged TORCH and if you are under twelve, please bring an adult with you!

HATHERLEIGH CARNIVAL - November 10 , 2007
Hatherleigh Carnival News Here it is – the final report before the big day itself! The 104th Hatherleigh Carnival will take place on Saturday 10th November 2007 and following active encouragement from the Carnival Committee (including a crepe paper workshop) this year promises to be the biggest and best carnival yet with even more local people entering floats and walking entries. Proceeds from the carnival will be going to Devon Air Ambulance, Hatherleigh Brownies and other local charities to be decided at the final meeting. Entries for the afternoon and evening processions should be given to Mandy Wonnacott by Thursday 8th November on (01837) 810678. The committee would like to remind everyone to please park carefully on carnival day, avoiding the tar barrel and procession routes (see carnival programme that should accompany this pump for procession routes). The committee are also looking for stewards for the evening procession. This requires wearing an official jacket, standing on the edge of the pavement to help ensure the public are safe (whilst gaining an excellent view for yourself – a perk of the job!) and attending a briefing meeting in The Old Schools at 6.00pm on carnival evening. If you feel you could help, please contact Mandy Wonnacott on (01837) 810678. Anyone who would like to carry a torch during the evening procession should collect their torch at the top of Market Street as the main procession starts and wait for their tableaux to reach them. Please do not light the torch and carry it back up Park Road. The suggested place to leave the torch at the end of the procession is at the bottom of High Street at the Buddle. Many thanks again from the committee! The fun begins at 8.00pm on Friday 9th November when the children will pull the unlit barrels to the top of town ready for carnival day. They will be led by Hatherleigh ‘jazz’ band (aka Hatherleigh Silver Band with a noticeably different style!). Carnival day itself begins at 5.00am when the tar-barrel team will pull the first run of flaming barrels through the town’s streets. At 11.00am the Eggesford Farmers Hunt will meet outside The George Hotel with their many horses and hounds – a great spectacle of countryside tradition. Following this, the annual Town Crier competition will take place in The Square with Town Criers from all over the region taking part. At 11.30am the judging of shop windows gets under way and will be carried out by this year’s president Mrs Sandra Collier, the retiring Carnival Queen Miss Hannah Winser and the Carnival Chairman Mr Mark Reddaway. At 1.45pm the children’s procession will assemble at Claremont Place and will move through the town to the market led by Hatherleigh Silver Band, this year’s Prince and Princess – Gregory Haste and Amber Morris and the 2007 Carnival Queen – Miss Lucy Wonnacott. The President Sandra, and her husband Steve, will crown the royalty at the market. This will be followed by the judging of the children’s fancy dress. At 5.45pm the carnival floats will assemble in the market for judging at 6.00pm prompt. Walking guys will also be judged at this time. The Carnival Committee believe that without the fantastic support from all the tableaux, Hatherleigh Carnival would not be the unique event it is. Therefore, generous grant money is given to all the many classes (please ring carnival secretary Mandy Wonnacott on (01837) 810678 for more information). 7.15pm sees the massed bands, including the Hatherleigh Silver Band, Okehampton Excelsior Band and Torrington Silver Band march up through the town in preparation for the spectacular torchlit procession at 7.30pm. The final tar barrel run will take place after the main procession has cleared; this should be at approximately 9.00pm – 9.30pm. A funfair, stalls, amusements and refreshments will be in attendance for all ages to enjoy. Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable carnival 2007. (Linda Wonnacott and Natalie Winser – Press Secretaries

Well I don't know yet if anyone guessed, as our meeting isn't until tomorrow, but if any of you are interested the '3 Bills' were not 'water, electricity and phone' as one witty cove suggested, but the Cranesbills...and you had to guess all three, namely Geraniums, Pelargoniums and Erodiums. So that's you're interesting new fact for today! Next month, at our meeting on October 18th, we hope to learn something just as, or even more, interesting when we have a talk on 'The Art of Bonsai' - not something that is widely practised but fascinating nonetheless. Do join us at 7.30pm in the Old Schools to find out more! Visitors are always welcome; with tea and a raffle to boot it's a very inexpensive way to while away a couple of hours!! Gardening Club SHOW - August 18 , 2007
HATHERLEIGH & DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB 'Show must go on', so Queen exhorted us - and so it must. Ah........., but......... I hear you say, the weather has not been favourable to us toilers of the soil - true enough, but everyone is in the same boat and there must be some things that are thriving in these cool, damp conditions and there may yet be weeks of blistering heat before Show day is upon us (though not if St Swithen has anything to do with it)!! I know, though, that you will all do your best, as you always do, and there are always those non-gardening classes to grab your attention; photography - 'water' seems to have been an aptly chosen category for this year! and as usual there are plenty of Cookery classes. Entries for these have dropped off in the last few years although I know that there are plenty of excellent cooks out there. Do have a look and try to enter something - and do remember the 'Entwistle Cup' for the best pasty - only one entry last year which was disappointing. Anyway you've all got plenty of time to think what to do, and don't forget the children's classes if they're stuck for something to do on a soggy afternoon!! This year we are in the Community Centre for the first time; we are all interested to see how that will work out. The date? Saturday, August 18th, exhibits to be staged between 8.30a.m. & 10.45a.m.; doors open in the afternoon at 3p.m. See you there Susan Gill

As you like it - Farms for city children - July 20 - July 21 , 2007
On Friday 20th & Saturday 21st July 2007, FARMS FOR CITY CHILDREN will welcome the Festival Players Theatre Company to Nethercott House, Iddesleigh to perform William Shakespeare’s very popular, light-hearted, romantic comedy, ‘AS YOU LIKE IT’ . The Festival Players are very well known for their outstanding open-air performances and are now in their 21st successful year. The play, set in the Forest of Arden, is considered by many to be one of Shakespeare's greatest comedies. The heroine, Rosalind, is praised as one of his most inspiring characters. Rosalind, banished from the court by her usurping uncle, Duke Frederick, switches gender and journeys to the forest to join her father and his friends. Disguised as a ‘boy’, she teasingly tutors her own suitor on how to win her favours! Observations on life and love follow, friends are made and families are reunited. Nethercott’s gates will open at 6pm. Please bring your own seating and picnics. Freshly prepared desserts - ‘Summer Fruits & Sparkle’ will be available for a donation. The profits from ticket sales will help to fund the work of the charity at Nethercott House, subsidising the 1,000+ children who are booked in to stay at our farm over the next 12 months. Nethercott House gardens will be open to the public on Sunday 22nd July from 2 - 5.30pm under the National Gardens Scheme. They will be serving delicious Devon Cream Teas. For Shakespeare ticket information telephone Tracy on 01837 811281
