Concert - July 6 , 2014
Village Hall Concert Sunday July 6th 1pm Meeth Village Hall welcomes Swedish singer/songwriter, storyteller, folk performer and multi-instrumentalist (and Meeth resident) Rosa Rebecka for a lunchtime concert on Sunday July 6th. In this special concert, Rebecka introduces a very special instrument: a century-old guitar which has been passed from mother to daughter for four generations. Played by Rebecka’s mother, grandmother and great grandmother, last year it made its way from Gothenburg to Meeth and was heard on Radio Four’s Saturday Live. In the show, the story of the guitar and its owners are brought to life, as the dramatic tales of four very different women are told through songs of the past and present, all performed with Rebecka’s trademark vocal brilliance and emotional intensity. Rebecka will be supported by a group of young, emerging singers from various parts of Devon, collectively known as The Resonance. The members of The Resonance have all been taught singing by Rebecka, but have voices which are distinctly their own. Their rich, intricate harmonies are a treat for anyone with a passion for the art of singing. Price: £5/£2.50 (14 and under), to include two-course lunch and tea/coffee For tickets, call Rose on 01837 810165 or Beryl on 810553. Booking before the 1st of July is essential, as numbers are limited!

Field of Dreamz - June 7 , 2014
Group of friends create a music festival to beat cystic fibrosis
A close group of friends, who are part of a group of very talented DJs, have decided to share their passion for music and the charity Cystic Fibrosis Trust with others by creating a Field of Dreamz Music Festival on Saturday 7th June 2014 in Torrington, Devon.
Many people don’t understand what cystic fibrosis is, or what it does, until someone close to them is affected by it. They soon discover it’s a life-shortening genetic condition – only half live to celebrate their 40th birthday. It causes the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, to become clogged with thick sticky mucus, resulting in chronic infections and inflammation of the lungs.
Georgina Wells, one of the organisers says it promises to be a great event: “The name Field of Dreamz was decided last year and it is a very fitting name for supporting and raising awareness for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust as many sufferers ‘dream to breathe easy’. Richard Heywood, the owner of West Yard Farm, Peters Marlands, Torrington has an ideal setting for the music festival and has a capacity for 500 people to attend. We have live bands all day and night on the main stage, and DJs playing all day and night in the dance tent.”
Audrey Williams, the regional fundraising manager for the south west says:  “It’s more than a music festival – it’s a family friendly day out! They have activities to keep all ages entertained from bouncy castles, face painting, games and stalls. There will be various food stands available throughout the event to keep your energy levels high and a licensed bar.”
Tickets can be purchased online: http://www.fieldofdreamz.co.uk Money raised will enable the Cystic Fibrosis Trust to invest in cutting-edge research to develop better treatments and, ultimately find a cure. It will also provide support to those with cystic fibrosis and their families and help the Trust to drive up standards in medical care.

At Bosvigo we will enjoy a tour of the house (not normally open to the public) followed by tea/coffee and cake, before exploring the gardens. The woodland garden, particularly, will be at its best at this time of year with bulbs, blossom and early season perennials.
A short distance away as we head back east, is Ladock House; a very different garden with woodland glades and plantings of rhododendron, camellia and azalea, and many fine specimen trees. We will also have the opportunity to visit Ladock Church with wonderful examples of  William Morris windows. If enough people request it, there is the optional extra of cream tea here.
We will leave Hatherleigh, near the Co-op, at 9.30 and should be back at 5.30 approx, probably earlier. The cost of £25 includes all entrance fees, refreshments at Bosvigo and return coach fare.
The trip is open to anyone who likes visiting gardens (or churches!) or indeed to anyone who just fancies a day out!

Walrus Dip - January 1 , 2014
Hatherleigh Walruses Following the success of the 27th dip last New Years Day when over £3,600 was raised for the Children’s Centre and the Gospel Choir, 1 Jan 2014 will see the Walruses take to the banks of the River Lew and thence into the murky depths of the river itself for a long 5 minute dip. The recipients this year are Hatherleigh Youth Football, Hatherleigh Players and Hatherleigh Festival, all of whom are in need of funding for their various projects. It is hoped that we can raise close to £4,000 this year. What better on New Year’s Day but to come down to the bottom of Town and support the intrepid dippers (some would say crazy dippers), watch their take on the events of World War 1 - 100 years on from the start of this momentous world changing event. Fun and frolics continue after the dip in the cricket club where the bar will be open, food will be served (1st come 1st served though – it goes quick). Its not a long do – we hope to be all home by 6.00 probably wrapped up by the fire! The event starts at 2.45 with the actual dip at approx 3.00. Come and support the event – YOUR WALRUSES NEED YOU. Richard Tidball

Dogs Trust is joining West Devon Borough Council’s Connect road show in Hatherleigh and Belstone to offer the service to anyone who comes along with their dog. It normally costs around £20 to have a dog microchipped and from 2016 it will be compulsory. Lee Paris, Campaigns Assistant from Dogs Trust, said: “We are really pleased to be working with West Devon Borough Council and would like to urge dog owners to take advantage of this limited microchipping offer. “It is through such valuable partnerships as this that the goal of responsible dog ownership across the board becomes a reality. “These events will highlight the issues surrounding responsible dog ownership in the West Devon area, and raise awareness for the importance of procedures such as microchipping and neutering. “We would like to encourage all dog owners living in the area to come along and get free advice from the experts on how to be a responsible dog owner.” The charity will be joining West Devon Connect again in 2014 at various locations to offer more free microchipping. The Connect road show regularly tours West Devon taking free advice and information out to communities. Everyone is welcome. Among the other partner organisations taking part next month (December) are Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), Action on Hearing Loss, Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA), CALL24 and South West Water (SWW). Kelly has a hair cut - November 8 , 2013
Personally we think she's mad but our friend Kelly Brown is having her hair shaved off to grade 2 to raise money for Rowcroft Hospice at Home, in memory of her dear family friend Rachel Didymus who sadly lost her battle with Cancer in July.
On Carnival Friday 8th November in the Tally Ho at 7.30pm, the clippers will be on and the hair will be off!
She did suggest that we take part as well, but in all honesty the idea of having no hair is not in any way appealing. With this in mind you can see that she is making a huge sacrifice in aid of this charity and deserves support and sponsorship.
If you would like to sponsor Kelly she has a form or your welcome to leave your sponsorship for Tina at the Community Centre Monday to Friday. You can also do so online at the website www.justgiving.com/Kelly-Brown33 or you can come along on the night and drop some coins into the bucket to show your support.

Confirmation Answers and Questions - September 3 , 2013
Admitting Children to Holy Communion before Confirmation An evening with Katherine Lyddon, the Diocesan Childrens’ Work Advisor, to explore and ask questions 7.30pm Tuesday 3rd September 2013, Old Schools, Hatherleigh In the Church of England, it has been customary for children (and adults) to receive Holy Communion after confirmation. However, since 2006, Dioceses and parishes in the Church of England have been allowed to decide to accept children to receive Holy Communion after suitable teaching, before they are confirmed, so they can join in with this central part of the family life of the Church, similar in some ways to the Roman Catholic tradition of First Communion. It is something that is already done in parishes across the country, including in Exeter Diocese. A request has been received by the Hatherleigh group of parishes from a local parent to consider whether they would adopt this practice. Each church will make their own decision in due course as to whether they feel it is the right way forward for them at this time. In the meantime, Katherine Lyddon is coming to help us understand more about this subject and share with us what is being done in other churches. Everyone is welcome (including those from other parishes)!
