Jumble Sale - March 6 , 2010
Jumble Sale Exbourne Village Hall has a Spring Clean Jumble Sale on Saturday March 6 in the hall at 2.15pm. Do have a clear out and bring jumble, books, bric-a-brac, cakes etc.along from 10.am to12noon. Then in the afternoon come along and have a good rummage and find some bargains. There will be a good raffle and tea and biscuits, all for the price of 30p.Your support is welcome in keeping the village hall maintained for the community.

Chess for all foir free - March 6 , 2010
Chess For All For free at three 6th March 3pm 41 Bridge Street, Hatherleigh The Hatherleigh Annual Chess Challenge this year is on Saturday 12th June. Hatherleigh Chess teams are based at the Duke of York and is part of a small league of four teams. Black Torrington, Great Torrington and two teams from Hatherleigh. We usually play on a Monday evening. On Monday 15th February Duke of York A lost 4 nil at the Duke against Black Torrington while the B team lost 4 nil against Torrington in the Royal Exchange. Rapid UK talk - March 3 in Methodist Hall, 2010
Rapid UK responds to calls for help from governments in deep trouble after a massive disaster like the one just seen in Haiti. Rapid UK teams go to the disaster area to help locate and extract survivors. They also help train local teams to do the same job, thereby spreading their skills worldwide. Find out more here including what they've been doing in Haiti.

Founder Graham Payne will give a talk and show some slides on Wednesday 3rd March in the Methodist Church for the Lady's British Legion. All are welcome.

Editorial Note: Graham gave his slide presentation at a recent WI Exbourne meeting, and it truly makes the eyes water to see what they have done. Support them!

Edwardian Music Hall - February 20 , 2010
The Players tread the boards Rehearsals for this year's pantomime" Ali Baba" were "snowed off" and this has left Hatherleigh Players with a dilemma. The show must go on.... but not the pantomime, which will be offered next year. Instead, Hatherleigh Players are offering for your delight and delectation ,a rousing evening of song and snippets in the form of an Edwardian Music Hall. The performance is on Saturday 20th February, starting at 7.30pm.

Lent Lunches - February 16 , 2010
Lent Lunches Tuesday, 16th February & Tuesday, 16th March, 12.15 - 2pm Hatherleigh Old Schools. £3.50 for hot soup, cheese & fruit: just the thing for early spring days! In fact, 16th February is Shrove Tuesday, so not quite Lent, but maybe the chance of a pancake as well as soup. The charity we shall be supporting is Shelterbox.

Meeth Guild Last month’s meeting was held on 19th January, Paul Rendell came along and gave us a talk and a slide show relating to Dartmoor. He does a wide variety of topics on Dartmoor, we chose on this occasion ‘Towns and Villages of Dartmoor’ and as it was an interesting evening we will probably invite him to come along again. Our next Guild meeting on 16th February will be with Jeneca Beads and we will be having a go at making jewellery. Wishing you all a Happy New Year. Rose Goldwater.

Flower Festival 2010 - February 9 , 2010
There will be a meeting on Tuesday 9th February at 2.00 pm in Old schools. On the Agenda will be the theme for this year’s festival, among other important items. We welcome anyone who wants to join us, you don't have to be an expert, none of us are. If you would like to try your hand at flower arranging do come along, you may be surprised at what you can achieve.

Messy Meeth Monkeys - February 6 , 2010
Meeth Monkeys The Messy Meeth Monkeys met at the beginning of January and welcomed the New Year by making Christingles which were then paraded in church the following day. The children enlivened all our services in December too by taking part with enthusiasm, dedication and appropriate solemnity, we welcome their contribution and are most grateful to them and their parents for the support they give the church. Their next meeting will be on 6th February at 9.30am in the Village Hall as usual.

WI Exbourne Sampford Courtenay and Jacobstowe WI meeting will be held in the village hall on Thursday 4 February. Elaine from Crafty Cards in Okehampton will be coming to entertain the members. Non-members are very welcome.

Exbourne Parish Council - January 27 , 2010
Exbourne with Jacobstowe Parish Council Exbourne with Jacobstowe Parish Council met on 28 October. There were apologies for absence from 2 councillors. Otherwise all members were present, but no members of the public attended. The chairman gave a report on a recent Planning Peer Review meeting he had attended. Cllr Weeks stated that the group’s draft report had been circulated to Borough Council members with an embargo, that it should not be made public until the council had drawn up a response and an action plan had been formulated. Councillors expressed hope that this would be complete within a reasonable time. The council had received correspondence from BT, offering the opportunity to adopt the telephone kiosk in Exbourne. Adoption would mean the telephone mechanism being removed and it was pointed out that 3 calls had been made in the last 12 months. Councillors heard that the kiosk was listed and could not be removed. It was decided not to adopt the kiosk. The Exbourne with Jacobstowe website was discussed, as the opportunity had been offered to link with Hatherleigh.net. Councillors decided to look into this opportunity further before making a definite decision. Following discussion it was decided to donate £100 to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and to convey to the RBL that the donation had been increased this year in view of their added financial burdens at this time. Planning: support of the Prior Approval Agricultural applications for land at Chattafin,Exbourne and Tor Down Farm, Exbourne was ratified. A new application for the creation of a new access at Niases, Jacobstowe received the support of the council. The Parish Council meeting for January will be held on Wednesday 27 at 8pm in the village hall.

Hatherleigh Sportsfield Committee are holding a coffee morning in The Old Schools on Tuesday 12th January. We would like to thank the Moor Management Committee for their donation towards the work on the shelter.

Exbourne WI - January 7 , 2010
WI Exbourne, Sampford Courtenay and Jacobstowe WI held a successful Coffee Morning in Sampford Courtenay Village Hall on Saturday 7 November for Children’s Hospice South West. There was a Bring and Buy stall and a Raffle. Representatives of CHSW sold merchandise and altogether £233 was raised. WI members wish to thank everyone for their support. The December WI meeting will be held in the village hall on Wednesday 2 at 7.30pm. This will be their Christmas Party and non-members very welcome. The meeting in January will be held in the village hall on Thursday 7 at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Steve Gazzard, an Exbourne resident, who will talk about his experiences as a Dog Show Judge.

New Year's eve Party - December 31 , 2009
New Year’s Eve Party New Year’s Eve Party!! Following the great success of last years party organised by the Playground Committee, We shall be holding a families and friends party from 7.30pm till 12.30am. We have taken onboard comments from last year and shall be organising more for the younger kids in the early evening before letting the older ones (That's me!!!) in on the act. Disco, sing star, face paints, fancy dress, raffle etc There will be a bar and food too. Watch out for posters. Tickets are available from the Surgery and local shops. £20 family of 4 or £10 adult and £5 child tickets.

Messy Meeth Monkeys - December 22 , 2009
Messy Monkeys In November, just before Remembrance Sunday, the Messy Meeth Monkeys were delighted to welcome Chris, a former Regimental Sergeant Major, to talk to them and answer questions about his army career - how it had taken him all over the world and given him some wonderful and some very frightening experiences.  They then spent time making cards to be sent to soldiers on the front line, thanking them for what they were doing on our behalf and telling them we were thinking and praying for them. At the next meeting on 5th December, we shall be preparing to take part in the service next day, and also thinking about their part in the carol service on 22nd December. The hand chimes will feature in both services.

Father Christmas Visit - December 18 , 2009
The next event is on Friday, 18th December when Father Christmas will be making his annual visit to the community shop and café, so drop in for a glass of mulled wine, a mince pie and a little last minute shopping.

Meeth Guild - December 15 , 2009
Meeth Guild Our meeting last month on 20th October was held too late to be reported in last months Pump. It was as usual a great success. Our speaker was an old favourite, Rosemary Wedlake, this time she made Parsley pasties, and very nice they were too. We also discussed our programme for next year’s meetings. This is coming along nicely. This month’s meeting was held on 17th November, Helen Stapleton came along to do some parcel decorating, just in time for Christmas. Surprising what a little bit of this and that will do to make a parcel look really good; we all had a go of course, even if it was wrapping empty boxes. So long as we don’t forget they are empty and give them to somebody for Christmas that would be good wouldn’t it. Our next Guild meeting on 15th December is to be a Christmas social event where we all just chat, eat, drink and get merry (not too merry). I would like to wish you all Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Rose Goldwater

The coach will leave Hatherleigh at 2.30pm, stopping at Truro for 2 hours before leaving at 5pm for Mousehole. We will be dropped off at Penanze to take the shuttle bus to the lights. Lights are switched on at 7.30pm with choirs singing on the harbourside as the land and sea are lite up...quite a sight I believe. We then return home. Tickets are £16 p.p. Samuel Jerman Memorial Sermon - December 6 , 2009
Looking forward, by the time this goes to print, advent and Christmas will be on our minds. 6th December is always now special for Meeth as we celebrate the Samuel Jerman Memorial Sermon. This will be the first time since we revived it that the date has fallen on a Sunday so we are planning a special morning service at 11am, reflecting both the church today and the church as it was in Samuel Jerman's time. The Archdeacon of Totnes, the Ven. John Rawlings has kindly agreed to preach the sermon. This will be followed by a hot, sit-down Sunday lunch in the Village Hall to which everyone is most welcome. As most people know, our Village Hall has limited space so we shall need to know in advance, that is by Wednesday, 2nd December, if you intend to come. Please let either of the church wardens know: Ingrid Dodd 810241 or Beryl Toop 810553. Please could you also let us know if at all possible if you have to cancel at the last minute, as there is sometimes a waiting list for our events and it is sad if there are empty spaces which might have been filled.

Home safety visits involve Fire & Rescue Service employee’s visiting your home to give advice and guidance in respect to fire and home safety needs. You may also qualify to have free smoke alarms fitted. There will be a wide range of leaflets and literature available covering all aspects of fire safety. If you are unable to attend the outreach drop-in sessions, but would like a free home safety visit please call 0800 7311 822. Meeth Guild - October 20 , 2009
Meeth Guild Our meeting last month was on 14th September and was as usual a great success. September is the month we share our meetings with Peters Marland and as it was our turn to host we also invited Shebbear, Highhampton and Petrockstowe. Shebbear unfortunately could not attend. Dan Garret also known as the ‘Fish man’ came along and gave us a good evening of entertainment and information about fish, he was slightly daunted when he realised so many would be there but coped admirably. He had some of us up filleting fish, this turned out to be fun for those involved and those watching. The result in most cases was pretty good too. Dan embarrassed us when he asked us to identify all the fish he brought with him (we were not very good). Later we had tasters of several fish he brought and cooked, lovely! We had a lovely supper supplied by the ladies from Meeth and a raffle. Everybody enjoyed the evening. Our next Guild meeting will be 20th October with Rosemary Wedlake we all remember Rosemary for her hats; this time she will be making pasties. Rose Goldwater.

Churchyard Maintenance - October 17 , 2009
Churchyard Maintenance Help Needed for Hatherleigh Churchyard Maintenance Morning Saturday 17th October 10.00am – 1.00pm We like to keep the church and churchyard looking as good as we can, so everyone can enjoy them, and are very thankful to everyone who helps us do this throughout the year. However, there are always bits of clearing, pruning, tidying and sorting that need doing that don’t get done in the daily round. We would be very grateful for any willing volunteers who were able to come along with any gardening tools you think might be helpful and give us a hand. The more, the merrier (and the quicker the jobs will be done!). Refreshments available in Old Schools for all volunteers. With grateful thanks, Rev. Gardening Club - October 15 , 2009
Hatherleigh Gardening Club Well, against all the odds you did it again - a record number of entries (about 100 up on last year) and a fantastic display of flowers, fruit, veg. and cookery; not to mention the children's exhibits which were of an exceptionally high standard. It was encouraging to see so many entries from children and good to see that the prizes were well spread out between them. Main prize winners were Les Cole (Autumn Challenge  and Vegetable cups), Alma Knight (cups for Flower Arranging, Fruit and Cookery), Ray Clarke (Flowers), Sue de Salis (Photography) and the cup for the highest points for children was shared between Joshua Yelland and Jessica Baulch. Best Exhibit in Show was again a joint award to Trish Wonnacott for her coffee cake and Les Cole for his potatoes, while the best children's exhibit prize went to James Burton. Congratulations to all exhibitors for making it such a wonderful show and thanks to everyone who came in the afternoon to enjoy the fruits of their labours and support the show. We enjoyed a very informative talk this month on 'Giving Structure to the Garden', though unfortunately there wasn't a huge turn-out. Let's see if we can do better this month when we have a talk on 'Woodland and Shady Plants'. Most of us have areas in the garden that are shaded by trees or shrubs so this should be of general interest. We will be decorating the Church on Saturday 3rd October to celebrate Harvest Festival. We would be most grateful for any donations of fruit, vegetables, flowers and greenery, please bring these along early on Saturday morning. These items will be auctioned at the Harvest Supper on Wednesday 7th October, 10% of money raised will be donated to Bicton College charity BOAT (Bicton Overseas Agricultural Trust), which brings farmers over to this country for training, so they can go back and improve their own techniques and teach others in their communities. Royal Party - September 12 , 2009
On Saturday 12th September, Hatherleigh Carnival will be hosting a Royal Party at Island Park. The annual Island Park Party and Royalty Evening, have been combined together this year, to create a bigger and more fun filled evening for the whole family. The Party starts at 6pm, Free Admision, with stalls to entertain you, a Ram Roast, BBQ and Bar as well as a Children’s Disco. There will be Live Music from "Contrast"-a local 2 piece band, and our famous Duck Races will take place throughout the evening. The voting of our 2009 Prince and Princess will happen during the evening, followed by all the 2009 Royalty being sashed by our Presidents, Tony and Isabel Conner. The 2009 Hatherleigh Fun Run - September 4 , 2009
The 2009 Hatherleigh Fun Run will take place on Friday 4th September. It is open to everyone, so please come along and enter or cheer the runners on. Races will be split by gender and age. The under 5's & 5-7 year olds will run approx 3/4 mile, 8-10 year olds 11/2 miles, 11-14 year olds - 3 miles and over 15 years- 4 miles. Medals will be awarded to winners & runners-up in each class at the finish line in the square - where there will also be a BBQ. Registration will take place in the market from 6pm. The routes will be the same as previous years with a map at the start and marshalls en route. There will be a small entrance fee to pay for the medals & certificates. The first race will start at 6.30pm from the market. This year the event is being run by the playpark committee. Fresh from their performance at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, the double bass led quartet are the main act at the event that will feature real ales and ciders from the West Country, a pork roast and support act (TBC). Hatherleigh Flower Festival - July 9 - July 12 , 2009
Hatherleigh Flower Festival 2009 Favourite Hymns and Religious Songs On Thursday 9th July to Sunday 12th July There will be a short meeting in the Parish Church on Tuesday 12th May at 2.00pm for all who will be helping, to finalise arrangements and sort out any queries people may have. Anyone who would like to join us will be very welcome. If you are concerned about the cost of doing something, no need to worry, you will be given money with which to buy your flowers and oasis will be provided. You don’t have be an expert just have fun. We hope to be serving refreshments in Old Schools this year on the Saturday morning and afternoon, Sunday afternoon only, so if you don’t want to do flowers your help in some other way would be much appreciated. Also this year Open Gardens will be on the same weekend. So make a note in your diaries Hatherleigh is the place to be this weekend. Bernarda at the Wharf - July 4 , 2009
‘Bernarda' comes to Tavistock Wharf.
‘Bernearda' follows a similar line of events to the original play(la Casa de Bernarda Alba), showing the lives of a tyrannical mother, her five daughters, her insane mother and the household cleaner unfurl. The opening scene shows the family's return from Antonio Maria Benevides' funeral (Bernarda's husband and father to four of the girls) and sees them embark on the beginning of eight years of mourning – however due to tragic circumstances, and a few stubborn daughters those years of confinement don't stay all that confined. The marriage proposal by Pepe el Romano to Angustius causes rivalry and jealousy between her and her siblings, Bernarda who refuses to recognise the extent of the danger around her sits in denial as an explosive end brings the tale to a dramatic close.
A newly formed theatre company, BadlyKeptSecret, makes it's debut at Tailstock Wharf with an original adaptation of Lorca's ‘la Casa de Bernarda Alba'.
BadlyKeptSecret have created an original performance which aims to add a modern twist to the original story. Lorca's work will always have points to make about any society regardless of time – and this play reflects that. ‘Bernarda' will definitely make you question the way you and the others around you live.
From the director: ‘The piece itself aims to explore areas of new theatre whilst maintaining the original feel of Lorca's ‘la Casa de Bernerda Alba' (The House of Bernarda Alba).

The Combined Churches Fete - June 20 , 2009
The Combined Churches Fete will be held this year on SATURDAY JUNE 20TH at 2.15pm at Longacre, Exbourne, or in the village hall if wet. We look forward to seeing you there, not only is this the big fund raising event for the two churches, but it is a time that all members of the village can join together and have a fun afternoon and enjoy cream teas. All the usual stalls will be there with a Grand Raffle, games, coconut shy, plants, cakes, produce, fancy goods, books, tombola,etc. A list of stall holders will shortly be displayed around the village and any donations would be most gratefully received before the day. D Day 65th Anniversary - June 14 , 2009
Royal British Legion D Day 65th Anniversary.  The RBL Hatherleigh Branch are marking this anniversary within the FamilyService at the Parish Church  on Sunday 14th June at 11a.m. Veterans of this great event will be amongst the congregation, including Ron Wildish who will recount some of his memories of the landings. Local Councillors have been invited to join us in commemorating this anniversary whichis officially  dated the 4th June. Membership to our Branch is open to anyone, irrespective of whether or not they were members of the armed forces. All are warmly welcome to a Branch meeting, usually held four times a year. Subsare £12-50 per year, which includes the British Legion Magazine. The Branch replaced its Standard last year, the old one now hangs permanently alongside the original Standard in our Parish Church, thanks to  generous help  from Lenny Richie who provided the extension to allow this facility. Stone Facing Workshop Meeth - May 30 , 2009
The Devon Rural Skills Trust is running a practical workshop in stone facing (i.e. building a stone faced earth bank) using traditional methods to be held on 30th May at Woolandon Hall . The Devon Rural Skills Trust is a charity which aims to keep alive the traditional crafts and skills which have been practised in the county for centuries. Recently several of the cast from Hatherleigh’s production watched the professional version of the stage play at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth. Afterwards we were lucky enough to meet the stars, including Vicki Michelle and Jeffrey Holland, and discuss various aspects of the show with them. coach trip to Tregrehan Gardens - May 27 , 2009
on Wednesday 27th May, we are hoping to run a coach trip to Tregrehan Gardens near St Austell. Described as a temperate rainforest woodland garden it boasts an enviable collection of rare trees and plants collected largely by the Carlyon family themselves and also has a more formal walled garden with magnificent glasshouse. It has been called 'the best thing of its kind in the world'. We hope that others of you who are not members of the club will join us so that we can take a coach for the day. We will leave Hatherleigh at 9.15ish and be back before 5.00pm - you can take a picnic to have in the grounds or there is a pub at the end of the drive where you can buy lunch; it's entirely up to you. Hatherleigh Gardening Club Next month we are fortunate to have as a speaker John Carter: 30yrs a nurseryman and exhibitor at Chelsea and all the major shows, author of 'Water in a Small Garden' for the RHS and former President of the NCCPG. Fine credentials indeed and for those of you unfamiliar with John, his garden and nursery are only at Brentor. He will be talking about his 'Favourite Plants' and as he holds or held four National Collections (Water Iris, Caltha, Lesser Celandine and Polygonum) some of these are, I suspect, going to figure highly on his list though I'm sure there will be others. Do join us on Thursday, April 16th, 7.30 in Old Schools for a talk that aims to 'amuse as well as inform'. Looking ahead, the annual SPRING SHOW AND PLANT SALE will this year be on Saturday May 2nd - schedules for the Show will be out soon but count on many of the same classes if you want to get a head start. The Plant Sale is always very popular and we are grateful for any donations of plants on the day or pick-up before can be arranged if that is more convenient. Doors will open at 8.00am (at the Old Schools) for setting up exhibits, the hall to be cleared by 9.45 for the judging. Doors open to the public and plant sale start at 10.30. Hatherleigh Mini Film Festival - May 23 , 2009
Hatherleigh Mini Film Festival May 23rd 2009 Our first meeting and workshop attracted a lot of attention from the local press, as a result of which we had 10 attendees, including several people from Okehampton. Contact has been established with the Devon and Cornwall Film web site which follows film makers across the two counties and is very interested to see what we can do. A good deal of enthusiasm is being shown, and many problems - mainly with hardware - were discussed at the workshop. Alan showed how to capture video and make a simple animated film. Geoff was brave enough to actually make a film about 'time' during the evening and burnt a DVD to prove it! A number of people who had registered their willingness to attend weren't able to come but have promised support. It looks like we will have 10 films at least to show at the festival. That's not bad at this stage. Our next meeting is planned for March. Everyone is welcome to attend – watch for posters. Hatherleigh Festival May 22nd - 24th The small and sweet 'reduced' Festival is almost upon us - your new style programme is enclosed, we hope you can join in with the fun! There are two brilliant concerts, a stunning Baritone on Friday and an exciting Baroque Trio on Sunday. The art exhibitions open on Friday evening, so please come along to view our local talent and enjoy a glass of wine. Don't forget to enjoy a cream tea after your leisurely stroll around the Hindsons lovely sculpture gardens on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.  Saturday is full of entertainment all day and includes live music, activity and workshop stalls, local arts and produce stalls, a mindblowing mingling magician, film festival, Street dance workshops, local 'surprise' singing duo! and good food and drink. It's all set in the grounds of the Community Centre for a change, so fingers crossed for sunshine. Saturday evening is a big one, so get your tickets a.s.a.p. The Comedy Variety Night is bigger and better than last years (and that was really great!) with an all new show, new acts that are even more ridiculous, hilarious and skilful. Suitable for adults and children over 11 - bring the family, it really is an unmissable treat. Thank you so much to all our generous supporters, volunteers and audiences, please continue to support the festival for a new look next year with a new Coordinator too. Please pass on any feedback to the Committee, so plans for next year can take into account your views and ideas - if you don't say, we don't know! And remember there is always a good reason for the decisions we make, so just ask us, or better still join in with the organising! If anyone can spare an hour or two to help on the Saturday, we would love to have you.

Fit Girls

Two local girls will be on parade in London on 26 April as they run in the London Marathon. Gemma Collier who is running for AbleChildAfrica and Hannah Dodwell who is running in aid of Asthma Charities. Gemma has spent months in Uganda as a volunteer. Two Village Walk - April 18 , 2009
Two Village Walk between Broadwoodkelly and Exbourne will take place on Saturday April 18. The walk will leave Broadwoodkelly at 11.30am for the walk on quiet lanes of around 3.5 miles to Exbourne, where there will be time for a rest and refreshments. This is a circular trip so the return walk is other quiet roads back to Broadwoodkelly for a cream tea.

'Water in a Small Garden' - April 16 , 2009
Hatherleigh Gardening Club Next month we are fortunate to have as a speaker John Carter: 30yrs a nurseryman and exhibitor at Chelsea and all the major shows, author of 'Water in a Small Garden' for the RHS and former President of the NCCPG. Fine credentials indeed and for those of you unfamiliar with John, his garden and nursery are only at Brentor. He will be talking about his 'Favourite Plants' and as he holds or held four National Collections (Water Iris, Caltha, Lesser Celandine and Polygonum) some of these are, I suspect, going to figure highly on his list though I'm sure there will be others. Do join us on Thursday, April 16th, 7.30 in Old Schools for a talk that aims to 'amuse as well as inform'. Looking ahead, the annual SPRING SHOW AND PLANT SALE will this year be on Saturday May 2nd - schedules for the Show will be out soon but count on many of the same classes if you want to get a head start. The Plant Sale is always very popular and we are grateful for any donations of plants on the day or pick-up before can be arranged if that is more convenient. Doors will open at 8.00am (at the Old Schools) for setting up exhibits, the hall to be cleared by 9.45 for the judging. Doors open to the public and plant sale start at 10.30. The Messy Meeth Monkeys - April 4 , 2009
The Messy Meeth Monkeys had two meetings in March, an extra one before Mothering Sunday to make cards and prepare for Sunday's service, when the pillars of smoke and fire which they made to illustrate God's guidance for the children of Israel through the wilderness will also be part of the service. The meeting on 4th April will be preparing for Palm Sunday and Easter. Meeting as usual at 9.30 am in the Village Hall, this will be a slightly longer meeting than usual. Easter is the highpoint of the church's year.

Emily Owen lives in Sampford Courtenay and is an undergraduate at Durham University, also studying music. They are both members of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and are putting on a small concert series to raise funds for the forthcoming USA Tour in Summer 2009. NYCGB will be touring round the states for a month performing in several music festivals and recording the follow up to Eric Whitacre’s bestselling CD, Cloudburst. The concerts will be a wide-ranging set of music, from Purcell’s ‘Tell Me, Some Pitying Angel’, to a Debussy song cycle and everything in between. Their accompanist is Roger Cleverdon, our accomplished organist and choir master at St. Andrews. Tickets are available on the door at £7.00 (£5 for students) Please come and support us, so we can take part in this amazing opportunity

His own garden, Coombegate Cottage near Liskeard, is full of winter colour and scent and opens for the NGS during February, so he should be very knowledgeable on the subject. Meeth Guild This months meeting held on the 17th February at 7.30pm in Meeth village hall was a fun evening, to join in and get your hands dirty! Our speaker for the evening was Susan Swanepoel, one of her many talents is painting on plates and glass etc. We were supplied with the relevant kit including a long stem wine glass, this was our object for the evening on which we were to paint some roses. But I’m not artistic, I hear you say. You don’t have to be Susan replied. Susan duly went through the process with us and gave us guidance throughout. Guess what 99% turned out good, with Susan’s help and expertise of course, and we all had a great evening. Next week we have a theatre evening at The Plough in Torrington, in March we have been invited to Petrockstowe ladies group to see Hilary’s Hats. Our next meeting will be 17th March with Kate McCormick. The topic is ‘Pampered Chef Party’. Do come and join us for the evening, you will be very welcome. Rose Goldwater Secretary

Fundraising Dance On 7th March there will be a special Fund Raising Event to help support our Community Centre. There will be dancing to the music of the Contrast Band between 8pm and midnight. This is a talented local group fronted by Clive and Adrian Timms. The Band plays a wide range of music to suite all tastes. Bar, with reasonable prices opens at 7pm, Tickets are £6 and are available from the Paper shop, Community Centre and from helpers in the community.  There will be a draw and so donations of items for prizes would be welcomed.

Want to get involved with Hatherleigh's Mini-film Festival 'Media-Rich' in May but don't know how to make a film? Then why not attend our workshop for beginners next Thursday Feb 12th? All ages welcome - just bring a wish to enjoy the multi-media experience! We expect to announce money prizes soon so start working on your Toy Story 9 or Shrek 8 now. History Society Our August meeting attracted a record attendance of fifty-five people to hear Johnny recount his experiences as a member of the famous Dambusters’ crew. There will be no Monday meeting in September but members will be visiting Weare Gifford Hall on Wednesday September 24th. DEVON AIR AMBULANCE TRUST COFFEE MORNING - September 16 , 2008
A Coffee Morning was held at Courtlyns (Dave and Margaret Weeks) on Saturday August 16th in aid of the DAAT. The event was organised by Lorraine Aagaard, Joan Sargeant and Margaret Weeks, who had all been grateful for the attendance of the Air Ambulance in the last few months. The sum of £517.23 was raised and they say a huge Thank You to everyone who attended or gave donations towards this very successful result.

Taizé Chant Singalong - August 19 , 2008
Taizé Chant Singalong 7.30pm, Tuesday 19th August Hatherleigh Parish Church On Sunday 31st August at 6.00pm, there will be a Taizé service at Hatherleigh Parish Church. This will be a quiet, reflective service using the chants of the Taizé Community (normally sung several times over) with readings, prayers and a time of silence. In preparation for this, there will be an opportunity to learn the Taizé chants being used in the service at a singalong at 7.30pm on Tuesday 19th August (probably for about an hour). Do feel free to come along whatever your singing ability and even if you are unable to come to the service, but would enjoy a bit of singing. Everyone is welcome!

.DEVON AIR AMBULANCE TRUST COFFEE MORNING A COFFEE MORNING IN AID OF THE DEVON AIR AMBULANCE TRUST WILL BE HELD AT COURTLYNS, EXBOURNE, (THE HOME OF DAVE AN MARGARET WEEKS) ON SATURDAY AUGUST 16TH, FROM 10AM TO 12 NOON. THERE WILL BE A BRING AND BUY STALL AND RAFFLE. WATCH FOR NOTICES AROUND THE VILLAGE. This is being organised as three ladies in the village have been involved in accidents in the last few months, which have caused the Air Ambulance to be called out. Luckily, none of the injuries were serious enough for them to use the Air Ambulance, as they were all taken to hospital by land ambulance. None the less, Lorraine Aagaard, Joan Sargeant and Margaret Weeks were very thankful for its attendance.

Dog Show Meeth - July 19 , 2008
The Fete and Dog Show on Saturday, July 19th. Do come and join in! All the usual classes for dogs - starting at 11am; lunches and teas to our highest, most delicious standards and interesting stalls and games to entertain everyone during the afternoon at the fete which opens at 2pm. We would love to welcome you here to The Old Rectory and would be delighted to have your support. 10% of the net proceeds will be given to charity, the rest is for the church. Because our church needs funds for the redecoration project, we are planning a Sponsored Walk in the form of A Parish Pilgrimage from St M|ichael & All Angels, Meeth to St Michael's, Chagford. this will take place over the Michaelmas weekend, 27th/28th September. You will find a flyer all about it with this Parish Pump. There will be a stall with full information at the fete and further information in next month's Pump. We shall need volunteers to help as well as walkers and the walkers will need sponsors, so if you or anyone you know would like to help in any way, please contact either of Meeth church wardens. This should be enjoyable but it has taken a lot of planning and will take a lot more work, we do want it to be a success, so support from every quarter is vital.

Merton Vintage Rally and Summer Fair - July 12 , 2008
Merton Vintage Rally and Summer Fair Saturday 12th July 2008 The Friends of Clinton School in association with The Clinton Hall are holding the first Vintage Rally & Summer Fair on Saturday 12th July at The Clinton Hall, Merton – an event if it proves successful we hope may be the first of many. We have several vintage / classic vehicles booked in, including cars, tractors, motorcycles and even the original Merton School Bus (a Bedford OB 1949) which was in service from 1962 to 1973. Anyone who remembers their school bus journeys fondly (and even those who don’t!) can come for a nostalgic ride on the old school bus. We hope that this event will bring in people from all over, especially outside the school community. Attractions on the day will include craft and trade stalls, car boot, BBQ, Cream Teas, Bouncy Castle, Grand Raffle and much more to entertain everyone. The fun starts at 12 noons until 5pm.
