Meeth Guild - May 20
We had a very good meeting for our postponed AGM on 15th April - with 14 members and 2 guest attending. Bridget Chisholm - practice nurse from Hatherleigh gave a very interesting, informative and at times very humorous talk from children and their ailments and the different way illnesses are treated now - through the years to some of our more mature members and how to care for ourselves - now we are recycled teenagers. Judy Proctor is our new president ( Beryl Toop having stepped down after several years.)  Particular thanks to Beryl Toop who has been such an outstanding president not just of the Guild but of the W.I. before that. Her warm and friendly enthusiasm encouraged everyone and did much to ensure the success of both organisations. We are all most grateful to her and hope she will enjoy a well earned rest from office. Rose Goldwater is our new secretary. Thanks also to Ingrid Dodd for her splendid work over several years. Jenny Green  is continuing as treasurer, Toni Littleford as Programme and Entertainment secretary and Phyllis Cobbledick our welcoming representative. The Rotary Club of Hatherleigh will be holding its annual Golf Ball Race in the town centre on Sunday May the 25th at 2.p.m. We are holding it at the earlier time this year as the club will also be hosting 5 visitors from Colombia at the same time. Our visitors have to be in Exeter for 5 p.m. so to ensure they also see the race we have brought the time forward an hour. Members of the club will be in and around Hatherleigh selling golf balls at £1 each in the next few weeks. Also people can pop into Honest Phil Pyle’s down at his emporium at the bottom end of town and purchase them. All the money raised goes into the Club’s general charity pot which is then used for re-distribution in the locale via grants to local schools, groups and clubs etc. Hopefully the weather will be a bit warmer and brighter than last year so that as many of the residents of Hatherleigh as possible will turn out to witness this amazing piece of tom-foolery and maybe win the prize for the golf ball that travelled the futhest down the hill. Bruce Luff, 2nd Vice President Rotary Club of Hatherleigh

Hatherleigh Bellringers Look forward to a Bellringing extravagance on Saturday June 7th when the Annual Okehampton Deanery Ringing Competition reaches Hatherleigh. The competition is held at a different Church Tower each year and it is our turn in 2008. Depending on the number of teams entering, the competition will probably start at 4 pm and will last about four hours. There are three sections, Novice, Intermediate and Main. The differences will become obvious on the day. Because there will be such excitement in the town we have decided to hold an open day just before the competition starts so that YOU can try your hand at ringing, have a look at the bellchamber (providing you can manage the climb to the top of the tower) and generally see what a challenging, fascinating and slightly dangerous pastime Bellringing really is. The Tower will be open from 1 pm on the day of the competition so feel free to come along, we are always looking for new, old and not so old bellringers. Light refreshments will be served in the Old Schools all afternoon
