Tar Barrels 2009

5AM: It was still a touch rainy and windy on Saturday morning so there were not too many people lining the streets to watch the morning barrel run. We managed to get onto a rooftop to take the morning shots below. It gave a great view over the Square but the sightlines were not perfect. Nevertheless we'd like to thank Jackie for opening up her house to us.

9.30PM: The rain and wind stayed away from 12 noon until well after 10pm so condistions were good for the evening pull. We managed to get quite a few good shots - perhaps they are a bit dark but the atmosphere comes across.

NOTE RE PHOTOS: For the first time ever the committee agreed to assemble formally together for team photos after each pull. We managed three quick sessions including one prior to the evening pull when everyone was more or less fresh. These worked OK but it would be worth taking more time over them next time.

The morning pull

Passing the Square in Market Street

At the end: the barrels get one last drink here before they burn out.

The evening pull

The pullers wanted this shot taken just before they started!

Bringing the ropes to the start

President Tony Conner lights the barrels

Rounding the corner into High Street

The final sprint along Bridge Street

Turning the corner into the market

The barrels after the pull, alongside the burned out torch frame

And this one was taken at the firesite.
