Friday Night

Hatherleigh fans will know that Friday evening is when the carnival really starts. It's the kids' opportunity to take the stage and we usually have 100 or more to help pull the two sets of barrels up the hill to their overnight resting place.

This year it blew a storm and rained like f*** most of the time so numbers were down and it was a more muted affair. Nevertheless we had around 50 kids involved by 8pm. This number dropped off a bit for the second pull (see below) but ... the job got done. Then it was back to the laundry rooms to dry off. Here's a flavour of how it went.

.

The Hatherleigh Jazz Band made its annual appearance to accompany the barrels up the hill.

Four torches led the way. Another two were added at the back, which considerably helped photography of the barrels themselves.

The procession in Bridge Street, led by the jazz band.

The going gets tough and the little ones had to pull hard up Market Street..

Second time round and ...

... we had lost a lot of the pullers by now, not surprising given the rain and wind.

The final straight. By now the rain was coming down in sheets. If you look closely you can see it in the top right quarter of the pic.

Thanks to everybody who helped get us shipshape for the barrel runs on Saturday.
