Carnival 2006

The Hatherleigh Tar Barrels - Tis a Devon Thing!

November 11th: here are a selection of pictures of the two pulls - both of which went off superbly thanks to a a great team effort. Well done everyone.

Special Note: These pictures are published for your enjoyment. Please read the copyright notice at the bottom of this page.

Here's a nice video clip from Mark Quick who stood by the Square to film the evening pull.
When you get to his page, follow his instructions to run the right hand frame.
It is a big file so, be patient the first time. It's worth the wait!

We did it! The 2006 Tar Barrel team celebrate after a great evening pull.

Notes: There are two sets of Tar Barrels, each built on sledges pulled by about 12 people. One set is run at 5am to start the day and the second is run at around 10pm when the Carnival is over. Both start at the top of town and are run down to the Market at the bottom, where a bonfire is built around the still flaming barrels and people stand and watch until the fire is just glowing embers.

The big news on the Tar Barrels front is that this year, for the first time, the runners and backup team will wear special Tee-shirts to clearly identify them. This is to ensure the Committee knows in advance who will pull, for safety and insurance reasons. No one else will be allowed to participate so, please note that, if you intend to turn up like in previous years in the hope of joining in, you will not be able to unless you've attended the meetings and are wearing your tee-shirt. Sorry, but that's the price of protecting the future of this most important part of Hatherleigh Carnival.

The tee-shirts (art-work shown left) have been produced in conjunction with Winkleigh Cider and the shirts also carry their new strapline - 'Tis a Devon Thing' - which everyone thinks is perfect. We're looking forward to seeing the 'team' coming down Market Street at 5am. Be there!

Our thanks to Margaret Bridgeman and colleagues at Winkleigh Cider for their kind cooperation. We have invited them to be our guests on Carnival Day and hope they will be able to come.
