Carnival 2005

The Hatherleigh Tar Barrels

There are two sets of Tar Barrels, each built on sledges pulled by about 12 people. One set is run at 5am to start the day and the second is run at around 10pm when the Carnival is over. Both start at the top of town and are run down to the Market at the bottom, where a bonfire is built around the still flaming barrels and people stand and watch until the fire is just glowing embers.

In the old days they were run at a sprint down to the Island. These days Health and Safety dictates that they must be walked for some of the time, though the sprints up High Street and later around the supermarket corner are both thrilling to watch. Even at the run the wave of heat that hits you as they pass by can be surprising. An occasional 'drink' is offered to ensure the flames don't die down en route.

Many kids want to run behind the Barrels. They can do this, but they are held back by a rope to prevent them running into the flames if the sledge stops.

Three of the pictures below were taken at The George corner, where the barrels are still being walked. Bottom right shows the supermarket corner being taken at a run. Why not visit next year and see the action for yourself? But remember to come for the weekend, starting Friday at 8, to catch the full spirit of this unique event
