Friday Evening | Saturday Morning | Saturday Afternoon | Saturday Evening | Tar Barrels Carnival 2005 Friday Evening Pulling the Barrels up Market Street is one of those experiences you should never miss. It starts off a Carnival night of fun and frolics and is not to be missed, especially if you are under about 75. All the kids in the Town gather to help - as many as 200 can be pulling on the ropes, oggy Oggy-ing as they climb the hill to park the barrels safely out of harm's way for the night. Damp weather for the few days before Carnival this year meant the torches did not want to light. But Tar barrels Boys are made of stern stuff and soon the hessian was alight. The procession is led by four Hatherleigh torches and the Hatherleigh Jazz band, which makes its annual appearance just for this occasion. Lots of leg pulling goes on, much of it lost on outsiders ... but that's as it should be of course! Come along if you can and join in.But stay for the duration, because you'll never know what you might see.
