Thorverton vs Hatherleigh Town
December 27th 2005

NEW CUB REPORTER PETER COOPER By match reporter Peter Cooper who, despite frozen fingers, managed to file this report with help from Dad:

"While most people were by the fire, not Hatherleigh footballers ... nor their true fans who made the journey to Mid Devon.

"Hatherleigh were without their manager so the responsibilities lay with Bert Heaman. Hatherleigh had a change of goalkeeper too, with Graham Bryant between the posts in the absence of Gary Toop.

"Hatherleigh were playing against the league leaders on a pitch which was uneven and with the frost coming out of the ground. The first half saw Thorverton having more changes than Hatherleigh, with them kicking down the slope.

"Hatherleigh's defence, ably lead by Reynolds and Bruce, kept their forwards at bay and some good saves by Bryant kept Hatherleigh in the chase. The one bad point of the first half was the booking of Endacott. The teams went in at half time with no score.

"Thorverton came out in the second half a much-different team - obviously the team talk had instilled some bite into their forwards, with the home team taking the game to Hatherleigh.

"This was not a classic match and Hatherleigh's normal flowing football was not at a premium due to the conditions. However, Hatherleigh again tried to dribble the ball into the net rather than shooting on target with the slope to their advantage. The only real shot of consolation was a 30 yard drive from substitute Ryan Davies, replacing Cooper at left back and making his debut for Hatherleigh 1st.

"The only goal of the game came in the 72nd minute when the home team's number 8 beat three players to slot the ball past the advancing Bryant - a good goal from a hard-working forward.

"Hatherleigh piled on the pressure in the final 10 minutes with Wollacott replacing Bedford, but to no avail. Shots on target might have brought Town the equaliser.

"Team: Bryant, Wonnacott, Cooper, Reynolds, Bruce, Bedford, Endacott, Dymond, Millington, James, Rice Subs Wollacott, Davies.

" Lets hope for better things when we play home to Heavitree next week!"

No pictures this time ... er, due to our Cameraman being at home by the fire!

(Actually he has been building a fish pond so he has all kinds of frozen bits too, though that's no excuse)
